Dear Neighbor,
Homemaking is often viewed as misogynistic, outdated, and of little importance. There’s been a significant cultural influence to encourage those views. Reflecting on this it seems odd that, in essence, there’s a campaign to belittle homemaking. Why push this message?
Clearly, I am not above doing my own chores and don’t agree with the culture on this topic (or most topics really). It’s my opinion that the home is the heart of a family. A home is intended to be a place of rest and revival. Turning a house into a home is not a simple task.
Your surroundings matter. Tons of research has been conducted on this to prove it. The lighting, the colors, the organization, etc. Taking the time each day to establish a clean, ordered, and attractive home is worth it. The popular existence of HGTV proves that people want to be in a comforting space with their families. The problem is that few are willing to put in the work.
There’s always work involved but maybe you’re viewing work through the wrong lens? The work of homemaking: laundry, dishes, cooking, organizing, etc. isn’t of little importance but rather the most accessible way to serve. Every day we are provided with a million little opportunities to serve others. And so many ignore these opportunities or outsource them.
Christians are typically asking the Lord “How do I serve?” “What is my purpose?” We often forget that our lives aren’t about us. We are instructed to die to self, to serve others, and to be Christ-like. If you’re not willing to do little unrecognized tasks then why would the Lord ever trust you with something bigger?
It’s time to start viewing the seemingly unrecognized, unimportant tasks of chores and cooking as something greater. Roll up your sleeves and get to work! Watch your house transform into a home and you’ll see the fruit of your labor. And likely, once you’ve humbled and proven yourself with this set of tasks, the Lord will provide you with a new set.
With Love,
Millie Baxter
